Self Reliance:Part 4

“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little mind,” it’s saying that little minds are scared of getting new information as big minds people want to learn more and receive new Information, not necessarily want to but they don’t mind it.
“To be great is to be misunderstood.” People misunderstand a person due to his different ideas from the masses, then the person is, in fact, a great thinker.
“ We pass for what we are.” Our character never changes no matter where we go. We pass for the person we are and not as someone else or something else.
Emerson’s essay really does and has got me thinking on what happens in my daily life. But it’s really hard to under stand him even with the teachers help, I have to reread it multiple times to figure out what he means and most of the time his words do have an impact.

Self Reliance Notes:Part 3

“Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” .... says, Emerson’s essay is an absolute genius, especially coming from 20years before the civil war stating that any bad poor man is jsut as good as any good rich person. Claiming that he would go to prison for these people that are drunk and asking for money.

“Their works are done as an apology or extenuation of their living in the world,” meaning that mean do a good deed for charity or other stuff to make themselves look good even when they know they’ve done some hurtful or harmful stuff like tobacco companies nowadays and possible back then too.

“For nonconformity the world whips you with its displeasure.” What Emberson is trying to say is that people who try to speak for themselves are always shut out and kept quiet but the outside world, meaning you can let go out and say what you want without people telling you that you’re wrong or your claim is false.

FIRST IMPRESSION: On Self Reliance

I really like how the author uses Latin in the first sentence before even starting the actually story. It got me ( the reader ) really Interested in the story, also made me think about what the story was going to be about and it’s ended up being relatable to. Since Latin is the root of a lot of langueges it gets a lot of foreign or bilingual people already just interested in the story because they can point out some of the words.
